Learning to spin yarn with a drop spindle

As grumpy as I may look, I really did have a good time learning to use a drop spindle.  A big thank you to Valerie for giving me the spindle and the roving (wool). Although I've been wanting to do this for years, I could never make up my mind as to what to get. An actual spinning wheel is a huge investment. Not something I would want to do considering I had no idea what I was doing. Even the drop spindles come with a wide variety of choices.  I still had no clue what to do with it once I would get one. It wasn't going to happen in the near future. And yet...

It did happen, thanks to Valerie. We went to a gathering of spinners at the Hands On Knitting store. The ladies showed us how to get started and Viola!  I loved it.

I've been spinning each day and each day I improve just a little bit more. I had read somewhere that you should learn to spin with a spindle first. I agree with that statement. Spinning with a drop spindle gives you time to get the feel of the wool and the drawing ( pulling it out). The drop spindle is a simple tool so you are not overwhelmed with all the mechanics and size of the spinning wheel.

With that said, I'm ready to buy a spinning wheel. I have no idea where I'll put it, but I want one. (g) I found one on Craig's list that may or may not have been sold yet. I sent her a text and I'll do some more shopping around.

Buying a spinning wheel was one of the big purchases I had planned for this year. I didn't put it on the top of the list because it was more of a goal than a reality. Looks like it might be a reality after all.
