Daily Writing Prompt

The rules are simple. Set your timer for ten minutes. Begin to write and include the prompt somewhere in your mini story. The word he or she can be changed to reflect whatever gender you want to use. Optional: Share your writing prompt in the comment section. Write everyday.
Today's prompt is:

An accident can be your best friend.

Elcie Lee can't go back to sleep, can't go back to who she was and what she did not know before that night in the old village hotel. Perhaps she called these manifestations through The Thin in a moment of desperation. Or maybe they have been waiting for her to come along. All she knows is that she is in a race to find out who or what they are -- indeed who or what she herself may be. Pursued by sinister beings, both human and otherwise, if Elcie does not uncover the secrets of her own past in time, she will be the next to disappear.

  1. “Man, I don’t want to go to work today.” James ran his hand through his cropped bleached hair. He was sprawled in a low sitting beach chair, his feet buried in white sand.
“Call in sick. What’s he going to do? Fire you?” Max his best friend squinted at the breaking waves.
    “Yeah, most likely.”
“What do you care? You hate that job.”
James stretched and lowered his shades over his eye. A seagull landed next to him kicking sand across his arm as it took a peek into his opened bag. It’s long beak reached in and snatched an unwrapped sandwich. It flew off with a squeal of thanks.
“Holy crap.” Max stood up. “That was brutal.”
The seagull was hit in mid-air by another bird who then ripped the sandwich from the bird’s bill.
James picked up the boomerang and threw it at the bird. It was a direct hit. The bird hobbled off, it’s wing appeared broken.
Max grinned. “Brutal. That gives me an idea. You should tell your boss that you broke your arm. Get a fake cast.”
    “What?”
“Yeah, man. I’m telling you an accident can be your best friend.”
