The Strain - the musical

Boom Boom, The fun has just begun. How much fun indeed! I loved listening to Ron Perlman narrate The Strain by by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan on Audible. It took me a long time before I could watch the television series as Corey Stoll pales in comparison to Ron Perlman. But that time has passed and I can now accept Corey as  Ephraim Goodweather. But most shocking to me was to discover my favorite character Abraham is being played by David Bradley. The same man who played the dreaded Filch in Harry Potter. The same man who played  the lecherous craven, Walder Frey in Game of Thrones. How could I not see through his disguise? Facial hair does indeed make the man. Or perhaps I was too enthralled with Kevin Durand.

For your viewing pleasure - enjoy this:

Book Review This Doesn't Happen In The Movies

This Doesn't Happen in the Movies by Renee Pawlish
Genre: Mystery / Thriller
Publisher: Indi November 3, 2011 226 pages
Rating: 👍 👍 👍 👍 4 out of 5

The first in a series, Reed Ferguson is a man with a trust fund and has a father who wants him to get a real job. Reed, a big fan of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, decides to hang a private detective shingle outside his door. In walks his first client. He's swept off his feet and wonders what would Bogie do?

Think of a cozy mystery, but instead of a woman being your main character, you've got Reed. And there are no recipes. Just like a guy, he spends a fair amount down at the pool hall doing... well drinking and playing pool with no one. To be fair, he's a good guy and doesn't take advantage of his client in her constant drunken phase. It's a quick read. I finished it in one day. There were times I got bored because I didn't get the music references so I wasn't able to get the mood setting the author was trying for. And then there is that little tidbit about not having to be licensed in Colorado to be a PI. Yeah, you do. It isn't much, but you still have to be fingerprinted and background check. I know, it's just fiction, but it sticks out and makes the story less plausible.

With that said, I still enjoyed the ride. I really liked his side-kick Cal, an introvert who rarely leaves his house and is a wiz when it comes to computers. And I liked the boys downstairs, Ace and Deuce with their big brother Bob.

For kicks and giggles, I decided to make a video to go with the podcast Death With A View. Let me know what you think of it in the comments below. This story has always given me warm fuzzy feelings. I suppose that's an actual bad thing.

New Podcast : Death With a View

Is it wrong that this story makes me sing on so many different levels?

Death With A View.

A simple tale of murder.

New Contest The Emotion Thesaurus

Starting August 18th and running one week will be a random drawing for the Kindle version of The Emotion Thesaurus. This e-book highlights 75 emotions and lists possible body language cues, thoughts, and visceral responses for each. A nice tool for the writer's toolbox. Good luck.

Home Sewn by Cassandra Ellis Book Review

Every now and then I need to unplug and get crafty. Today's book review is  for the reader who enjoys what they can do with fabric.

fig 1
Bohemian chic is what came to mind when I first opened the book Home Sewn. There are 32 projects to inspire you. Lamp shades and  gilded silk organdy butterflies are but a few for the living area. I do like the butterflies. They are whimsical. For your resting area, there are patchwork organdy room dividers, pillowcases, a quilted headboard and more. The Eating and Sharing section includes a cotton, silk, and leather chandelier, tea towels, a hand-painted canvas floorcloth, and more.

fig 2
The best part of the book are the artistic pictures. Keep in mind, the beautiful pictures have nothing to do with the actual projects. For example a wooden swing under a tree or a set of stones, a dog on a blanket on the floor, a dried sunflower, a colander in the sink (fig1), and a view of the garden from a door (window?)  I get these pictures were possibly put at the beginning or end of section/projects, but I would have preferred the pages be used to show more detail of the projects. I liked the quilts. It would have been nice to have seen the completed project instead of a draped quilt with a fold (fig3).

You may have noticed I underlined the word inspire at the beginning of this review. Inspire is what this book does. Instructions for for a lampshade cover consisted of buy a lampshade kit and watch the videos. Instructions for the cotton duvet is for the cover, not the duvet (which you purchase)The instructions in this book are minimal and you best have a clue as to what you are doing when it comes to sewing. Of course, you can always watch a how to video on YouTube.

Rating from 1 to 5: I give this book a 3. It needs less fluff and more detailed pictures and I don't mean holding a needle and thread in your hands.

Available at Amazon.com
Disclaimer: This book was provided free by Blogging for Books in exchange for my honest review.
